Many people are very happy to maintain their prejudices and are unwilling to accept that sometimes they are simply wrong.

If you, as an older Farang, marry a younger Thai woman, you will immediately be put in a box from which you will not be let out so quickly.

Of course, for many Thai women, marrying a farang serves to provide financial security for their own family. You should be aware of this. In addition, in Thailand it is not the individual but the family that comes first. This should also be clear to every Farang before he marries his dream Thai woman.

However, the situation for my wife and me was different. She comes from the south of Thailand and her family has a large rubber tree farm. This means in Thailand they belong more or less to the upper middle class. My wife has five other siblings and all of them, except the eldest sister who runs the farm, have studied. So she was certainly not looking for a farang to secure herself financially.

We also decided before our wedding that our center of life would not be in Europe, but in Thailand with our large family.

Admittedly, we are an exception, but some people don't want to accept that. This sometimes creates funny situations, such as these two:

Since I still live and work in Germany, I had to go to the tax office after our wedding to change my marital status and clarify the tax class matter. Since my wife does not come to Germany and is therefore not registered for tax in Germany, I am married under family law, but remain single under tax law, i.e. in tax class 1.

Tax officer: "You are now married, but you have entered tax class 1 on the form. You can go into class 3/5 or class 4/4. But you cannot stay in class 1!"

Me: "My wife lives in Thailand. She doesn't work here."

Tax officer: "It doesn't matter whether she works, you have to decide on the split, 3/5 or 4/4."

Me: "you didn't listen to me, my wife lives in Thailand not in Germany!"

Tax officer: "I understood that, but she'll definitely be coming here soon. So what should I enter, 4/4 or 3/5"

Me: "You can enter 1. My wife won't come to Germany."

Tax officer: "What now? She won't come to Germany? Then why did you marry her?"

Me: "I won't comment on that now. Please enter tax class 1?"

Tax officer: "married and tax class 1?! Wait a minute, I have to clarify that with my boss ...."

You can experience amazing things if you don't fit the stereotype.

Things went a little faster at German customs at the beginning of this year when my wife and I entered Hamburg for a European tour.

Me: "Hello, this is my wife's passport and visa. She is coming to Germany for a few weeks.'

Customs: "A visa? Why doesn't your wife have a residence permit?"

Me: "because she doesn't live here, but in Thailand"

Customs: “But you live here in Germany?!”

Me: "Yes, why are you asking? That's what it says in my passport?!"

Customs: “So your wife doesn’t live in Germany?” ...

It's sometimes funny what you can experience when you're not what is expected of you. A life full of funny moments.
